Hey, Vegas first-timers! Planning your first trip? Check out our guide for simple tips on Las Vegas dos and don’ts. Of course, one forgets the world in the madness of Las Vegas.
But there are a few simple things you should know so you can enjoy the city to its bits without getting in trouble, spending where you shouldn’t, or missing anything worth experiencing.
I spent an amazing time in Vegas but while experiencing the glitz and glamour of the strip, I also learnt a few things that one should know before visiting. Las Vegas, also known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, offers a unique and vibrant experience for visitors.
Here are some important dos and don’ts to keep in mind for your Las Vegas trip:
Don’t “Save Money” By Staying Off The Vegas Strip
It is like boarding a flight for the first time but sitting on an aisle seat – struggling for the stunning views all the time, thinking a window seat would’ve been great.
Las Vegas will make you fall in love with it if you spend your energy, time, and money on the right things rather than traveling to and fro.
So, unlike other destinations, please don’t try to cut down your budget by compromising on your accommodations. I learned it the hard way but it’s better if you don’t go beyond Planet Hollywood Resort.
We decided to stay at Mandalay Bay to explore the south strip after spending the first two days at the Venetian Resort and the next two at Bellagio. Commuting to the north strip would be tiresome and time-consuming if you choose to stay on the south side and visit the north.

So, go for accommodation in the south only if you really want to explore that strip. Otherwise, save yourself from a lot of walking and be sure to check the hotel location on maps before booking. You can take the monorail to travel on the strip – it’s easier, quicker, and cheaper than Uber.
While off-strip accommodations may seem more affordable at first glance, it’s essential to weigh the advantages of staying on the Strip. The convenience, entertainment, atmosphere, and access to remarkable dining and shopping experiences make staying on the Las Vegas Strip a worthwhile choice.
Do Check The Daily Resort Fee
So many of us are not aware of resort fees. Hotels charge resort fees for amenities like fitness centers, local telephone calls, internet access, etc. When you search for hotels, the price may seem low as it doesn’t include the resort fees and tax but it is added later on for every day of stay.
It ranges between $20 and $50 per day in addition to the room and parking charges and is imposed mandatorily regardless of using or not using the amenities. Therefore, it’s important to have a look at the hotel’s daily resort fee before making any bookings so that you don’t end up spending a lot on the amenities that you don’t use.
Don’t Underestimate The Distance
I remember planning the agenda for our first day in Vegas – it was so vivid and nowhere considered distance. My plan included visiting several attractions, walking across streets, hopping into cafes, and so much more – which, at the end of the day, made us realize that it’s no joke to do so much in a day.
Everything is so massive in Vegas! Be it simply the lobby of a hotel or the yard of a resort. Walking from one place to another is more interesting than you think. Thanks to the gorgeous views all around, it also takes longer than you think. So, plan your agendas accordingly.
Don’t Miss Sphere At The Venetian Resort-It’s A Must-See!
You should definitely check out the Sphere at The Venetian Resort – it’s like this mind-blowing entertainment hub. Picture a place where concerts, shows, and events come alive in a seriously cool setting. It’s not just an attraction; it’s an experience you don’t want to miss. Trust me, you’ll be thanking me later for this awesome recommendation! You can find out tickets here.
Do Wear Comfortable Shoes
Thank god I carried a pair of sports shoes to the trip, I did not end up exploring Las Vegas limping. I walked around in heels for one day and had my toes hurting so bad after all the walking.
Your daily exploration will entail around 3-4 miles of walking, so choose comfortable shoes, don’t be in a rush all the time, and include sufficient breaks in your day plan.
After all, you want to return home pumped up with good memories, not with sore feet to be taken care of.
Don’t Walk Alone Along The Vegas Strip At Night
Strolling solo along the Vegas Strip at night might not be the best move. It’s not about being all doom and gloom, but you know, it’s just safer to have company. The lights are dazzling, and the vibe is cool, but having a buddy with you adds that extra layer of security.
Outside the Venetian Resort, las vegas
Most parts of Las Vegas are safe for tourists. The prominent tourist area (the Vegas strip) is well-lit, patrolled by metro police, and has cameras in every nook to safeguard the tourists.
But refrain from roving off the Vegas strip late in the night. Other than that, you’re free to go ahead and enjoy the nightlife on the main strip. Safety first, party second!
Don’t Spend All Your Time In gambling
There’s a lot of buzz about gambling when it comes to Las Vegas, but be sensible while you’re at it. Going overboard can cost you a fortune and you certainly wouldn’t want that in the middle of an exhilarating trip.
Bugsy’s bar inside Flamingo las Vegas
Alternatively, you can go for the low-stakes casinos or try the electronic tables. But don’t forget that Las Vegas has so much more to see than mere gambling. We were newbies to gambling and had a lot of fun spending some limited time and money at the casinos in the night.
One thing that we reminded each other to keep from crossing the limits– don’t consider yourself lucky enough to hit the big jackpot! You can try it too, works pretty much.
Don’t Relay On Casino ATMs
Why not when they’re such a convenient way to get cash on the go? Because there’s a high fee that’s levied in exchange for that convenience.
You’re shown the fee before you choose to complete the transaction so you can know how much you’re paying for the service. However, it’s wise to walk down a bit, buy a bottle of water, and withdraw some cash using your debit card.
Don’t Open The Hotel Minibar
You wouldn’t want to do that unless you have an extra grand to spend here and there. Mini-bars in Las Vegas Hotel rooms are extra pricey and have a sensor that registers if you remove an item for sale for more than 45 seconds post which, your credit card is charged automatically – even if you place the item back.
So it’s better not to open or move the minibar at all. Also, take a closer at the labels on the complimentary water bottles in your rooms. If you read “Do not open it”, follow what it means or be ready to pay $6 to $8 for it. You can buy water, cold beverages and other grocery items from CVS which is on the main strip.
Don’t Rent A Car Unless Required
If you intend to travel only along the Vegas Strip, there’s no point in renting a car. However, if you wish to explore the city beyond the Vegas Strip, it makes sense as you can save money and time.
Exploring the strip without a car can leave you tired sometimes especially if you visit the last point towards the south strip. In that case, you might take an Uber to get back to your hotel.
I also suggest taking an Uber to visit Fremont Street and downtown as the distance is long and the neighborhood isn’t very safe to walk.
D0 Maximize Your Experience By Free Entertainment Opportunities
Don’t be driven by the misconception that Las Vegas only offers gambling in the name of touring. Even I was a little skeptical as I generally love visiting natural places more than cities. But after visiting this city, I was highly impressed by the tons of attractions all along just one popular strip. The design is exemplary.
By the way, if you’re looking for some free entertainment, you can spend time admiring the fascinating aura of the casinos, resorts, and huge entrance lobbies.
“Flamingo Wildlife Habitat, the Bellagio Conservatory, and Botanical Gardens, Bellagio fountains, Venetian Gondolas are also worth a visit.“
Do Make Reservations At The Restaurants
With so many tourists visiting daily, the restaurants run at their full capacity almost all times of the day. So if you want to skip the long waits, it’s always better to make a reservation, especially at famous restaurants, and have a table waiting for you when you show up.
We had our anniversary celebration dinner at Spago in Bellagio and my birthday special dinner in the Eiffel Tower Restaurant.

If you’re looking for a standard restaurant, you can find many options at every hotel and resort. To grab quick food, I’d recommend going to Grand Bazaar. I’ve handpicked some fantastic restaurants for you to check out, and you can get all the juicy details about them right here.
Do Check Out Downtown Las Vegas
Downtown, especially Fremont Street, is a whole different ballgame from the crazy energy of the Strip. It’s got this laid-back, yet vibrant vibe that’s just waiting for you to dive into.
Fremont Street, las Vegas
Seriously, you’ve gotta check it out – it’s like discovering a hidden gem within the glittering chaos of Vegas. So, don’t just stick to the usual, take a detour downtown, and soak in the unique charm. Your Vegas trip will thank you for it!
Do Take Time To Explore Different Resorts, Hotels And Casinos
Make sure to go through different hotels and casinos – trust me, each place has its unique vibe and cool things happening. It’s like a mini adventure in each spot, so go ahead and check them out. You might find yourself easily spending an entire day at just one hotel.
Don’t Jaywalk
Hey, quick tip for strolling around Vegas: avoid jaywalking. It’s basically crossing the street anywhere you feel like, and it can get you in trouble. Stick to the crosswalks and signals; it’s safer and keeps the Vegas vibe cool without any ticket hassle.
Don’t Try To See The Entire Grand Canyon In A Day
I know your Instagram awaits a picture of the Canyons when you’re in Las Vegas but know that it’s not possible to see the whole of the Grand Canyon in a single day. We’d planned to give the Grand Canyon a day and a half for the visit but then we realized that it won’t be possible to cover the entire area in such a short time.
If you really want to explore the National Parks, my suggestion would be to reserve a week after spending a couple of days on the strip. You can also consider renting a car to visit off-the-strip attractions
