If you ask me the most magical thing to do in New Hampshire during the fall, I would say driving on the Kancamagus Highway! Counting on my amazing memories, I can go on to the point of calling it the best fall foliage spot in New Hampshire.
There’s a breath-taking spread of red, orange, and yellow leaves till as far as you can see, and it’s nothing but heavenly. There isn’t a moment without astonishment on this 34-mile drive with several overlooks, trails, and waterfalls adorning this scenic byway and I think that’s what makes it so special.
The route has so many wonderful attractions on the way. It’s around 1-2 hours of drive technically, so if you’re running short on time, you can simply take a drive along the route to see the fall foliage. But otherwise, I urge you to take your time and make halts at the beautiful highlights on the way that are sure to fill your hearts with joy and memories.
Is the Kancamagus Highway worth it?
Yes, the Kancamagus Highway is absolutely worth visiting during the fall, especially if you’re a fan of vibrant foliage and breathtaking autumn scenery. Highway 112, also called the Kancamagus Highway, runs for just over 30 miles from Conway to North Woodstock. It’s a beautiful road with amazing views and interesting places to visit.
Our fall foliage trip became even better when we drove along this scenic highway. Here are some compelling reasons why it’s a popular destination during this time of the year: spectacular autumn foliage, scenic overlooks, outdoor recreational opportunities, reduced crowds and photography paradise.
Where to Start the Kancamagus Highway?
You can begin your drive on the Kancamagus Highway either in Lincoln or Conway, two lovely towns situated in the heart of the White Mountains in northern New Hampshire.
Where to Stop on the Kancamagus Highway?
There are numerous picturesque stops along the Kancamagus Highway that offer a chance to experience the natural beauty of the White Mountains. Here are some recommended places to stop and explore:
1. Visitor Centers
Make a stop at the White Mountain National Forest’s visitor centers, including the Saco Ranger Station and the Lincoln Woods Visitor Center, to gather information and maps for your journey.
2. Hancock Overlook
For those of you who have a deep appreciation for mountains, I strongly recommend making a stop at Hancock Overlook. You’re guaranteed to be overwhelmed by the spectacular views of the Osceola Range.
Keep an eye out for the “hairpin” turn as you navigate the Kancamagus Highway; this is where you’ll find the overlook. However, I encourage you not to skip this extraordinary stop. Hancock Notch Trail begins at the overlook and provides a beautiful and relatively easy path to Mt. Hancock.
As an added bonus, the overlook offers exceptional photo opportunities, especially during sunset when the sky is adorned with warm, golden hues that complement the setting sun’s rays.

3. Pemigewasset Overlook
As you travel along the Kancamagus Highway, get ready to see some incredible viewpoints. Pemigewasset Overlook is one of the best. The views here are so beautiful that you could spend a whole day here and still enjoy the scenery.
There’s a covered area with seats at the main viewpoint, and there are signs that explain the details about the mountains and rivers around. This spot is probably the highest point along the road, so you can see a wide view of trees, big mountains, and a lovely sky. Don’t forget to stop here during your drive to make the most of it.

4. CL Graham Wangan Grounds Overlook
What better than to have a spectacular view of a river, mountains, sky, and dense vegetation altogether from one spot? Well, CL Graham Overlook offers just that and more. The overlook has a large paved parking area surrounded by a variety of vegetation, enhancing your immersion in the natural beauty of the area.
We were amazed by the spectacular view of the Swift River Watershed and huge mountains in the distant sight towards the north as well as east. With the added allure of fall foliage, the scenery takes on an even more surreal and picturesque quality.

5. Sugar Hill Overlook
Located conveniently halfway between Lincoln and Conway, this overlook offers breathtaking vistas of Mt. Tremont, Owl Cliff, Bear Mountain, and the renowned Sugar Hill itself. Prepare to be in complete awe of the glorious mountains draped in vibrant fall foliage.
Every photograph you click would be majestic – it’s so beautiful! So take a moment and stop to admire the views, light breeze, and quiet serenity of the place – you won’t regret any of it.

6. Sabbaday Falls
Nestled in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, Sabbaday Falls is a captivating waterfall. For those who relish the outdoors and have a deep appreciation for nature, I highly recommend to experience the splendor of Sabbaday Falls.
It is easily accessible via a 15-minute walk which is a beautiful experience in itself. The trail runs alongside the falls, leading you to an elevated vantage point. From here, you can relish the panoramic views of nature’s marvels. You’ll also find informative plaques that detail the geology of the falls.
Swimming is not allowed here but the short trail and the beautiful falls make for a perfectly refreshing and family-friendly picnic spot.

7. Rocky Groge Scenic Area
Prepare to be captivated by the awe-inspiring sight of a narrow, powerful gorge, regardless of the season you choose to visit. Upon reaching the parking lot, embark on a brief and leisurely walk along the Swift River, crossing a footbridge that offers picturesque views of the gorge and the rushing water below.
The experience is made even more remarkable by the sound of the water gushing through. Take your adventure a step further by continuing beyond the bridge to reach Falls Pond, an unbelievably beautiful sight, especially during the fall.
Here, you’ll witness the reflection of trees adorned with autumn colors in the serene waters, providing ample opportunities for stunning photographs.
8. Lower Falls: A Picnic Paradise
Lower Falls is a stunning recreation spot in White Mountain National Forest located on Route 112 on Kancamagus Highway. We were amazed to see how this picnic spot was so well maintained and full of high-spirited vibes.
Here, you’ll discover covered picnic spots, convenient grills, welcoming picnic tables, and a captivating view of the Swift River’s rushing waters. Witness the Swift River gracefully cascade over granite rocks, forming a serene, inviting pool that will keep you entertained for as long as you choose to stay.
Don’t worry about parking as there’s a large parking area at Lower Falls Recreation Site.
9. Russell-Colbath Historic Site
Explore the preserved 19th-century farmhouse and an old cemetery to learn about the history of the area. The Russell-Colbath Historic Site provides a unique opportunity to step back in time.
It allows visitors to gain a deeper appreciation for the rich history and heritage of the White Mountains. It’s a place where you can connect with the past while enjoying the natural beauty of the region.
10. Albany Covered Bridge
Albany Covered Bridge is one of the longest and most heavily visited bridges in New Hampshire. The bridge is a great place to stop by for rewarding sightseeing of the scenic surrounding. It’s great if you visit during the peak fall season as the scenery is at its extreme best around that time.
Also, parking is not a problem at all as there’s ample parking space on the site. You can also spend a restful time on the benches along the river. There are lots of places to hike as well if you’re interested. All in all, the spot has a lot to offer, so do stop by and enjoy!
