Hiking the Lonesome Lake trail: What to expect
Somewhere In The Middle Of The Trek
The trail is moderate overall but it might appear steep to some at times. After around half a mile of the hike, you will come across a few tributaries. They enhance the view and make it a very pleasing experience to walk past.
The trail also features three long switchbacks which are quite rare in New Hampshire. So even if you’re finding the trail a bit steep, keep going as the only way to the lake is straight up the mountain.
To make the hike a bit easier, there’s a rock staircase on one of the two paths that you can take. The other one is mainly loose soil. You can take that one too, but if you like it easier, take the path on the left and climb the rock steps. However, you can expect the trail to start leveling off after the last switchback.
As you start seeing a clearer and more open view of the sky, know that you’ve almost made it to the lake view. The views of Franconia Ridge from the lake are nothing short of breathtaking.
Every step is a picture-perfect moment
How to explore the Lonesome lake:
At the top of Lonesome Lake Trail!
Once you arrive at the lake, you can either take a left and explore the entire lake or take a right for a closer and better look at the lake as well Mount Lafayette and other mountain ranges. The lake is this beautiful stretch of water, kind of like a big mirror, surrounded by taller peaks in the back.
You get these amazing views of the lake and the nearby and faraway mountains from different spots. Right by the AMC hut on the shore, there are these wooden spots that look like docks. It’s a cool place to chill by the lake, and guess what? You can even take a swim! So, pack that swimsuit (and you can change at the hut).

AMC Lonesome Lake Hut:
After arriving at the lake, you can take a left to get to the AMC Lonesome Lake Hut. Don’t forget to stop by it. The Hut is a real gem! It’s this fantastic place with restrooms, dorms, a kitchen, and a dining area. And don’t miss the deck – it has the most awesome views. The staff is super friendly, and you can grab snacks, use the restrooms, and get water.
If you’re into planning ahead, you can even book a room and stay overnight to explore the high trails. But if you’re just out for a day like me, no problem! You’re totally welcome to soak up the cool vibes at the hut.
Follow the signs, and you’ll never miss a scenic spot!
Important note:
The trail is usually very crowded so be sure to reach early for parking. Else, you’ll have to walk the bike path in addition to the long hike ahead. The trail is made comfortably accessible because of the signage and yellow trail blazes all along. So just keep following them and you’ll be on the right way.
Our whole adventure lasted around 3 hours, and that includes a good chunk of time just enjoying the lake and the hut. We took some extra moments to snap pictures, shoot videos, and just chill and relax.
Oh, and a heads up! Make sure to bring along some extra layers and gear for the weather—it can be a bit unpredictable, with clouds rolling in and things getting cool. Just be ready for a mix of conditions!
Views and experiences along the way:
You might sweat and get a little tired as you ascend, but trust me, the views are so rewarding. The overall experience is very fun-filled, relaxing, and satisfying. The spectacular views of Franconia Ridge with a stunning top view of Lonesome Lake make this hike very evocative in terms of beautiful scenery and invigorating vibes.
We were welcomed by the forest in its glorious diversity which made the experience so great. There are also several small tributaries of the Pemigewasset River that adorn the trail. If you’re someone who finds immense pleasure amidst the beauty of nature, don’t miss this trail!

Descending:
On your way back, you can either take the same way back or complete the loop by descending Cascade Brook Trail. All in all, it’s a great and one of the most cherished hikes in Franconia Notch State Park. So don’t miss it out and make the most of it while you’re there!
